DR Congo to hold polio immunization campaign

Kinshasa, DR Congo - More than 8.6 million people living in Kinshasa will be immunised against poliomyelitis in a huge campaign scheduled for 23 to 27 March, the Congolese minister of public health, Victor Makwenge Kaput, announced on Thursday. 'In view of the danger and the risk, we are going to concentrate on Kinshasa to help manage the epidemic,' he said. 'We have already advocated a national campaign next April. Despite this, we prefer to tackle the problem in Kinshasa in view of the contamination risk tendency,' the minister of public health highlighted.

According to Mr Kaput, who announced the detection of new cases in Kinshasa, one confirmed case of poliomyelitis represents a contamination risk for more than 200 people in the environment.

He said the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its traditional partners, the World Health Organisation (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) were determined to eradicate polio in DRC.
